Three ways a service charge is written — and a MOP 200 difference

Home/Guides/PRICING

Pick the same 2,000 tier at two venues and one bill comes to 2,000, the other to 2,200. It is not your negotiating. It is how the words “service charge” are written on the sheet.

Macau saunas use three different conventions, and they sit on the same street. Here they are, followed by which venue uses which.

Three ways, three totals

+10%10% added at settlement2,200
5% + 5%Split into two lines with different labels2,200

The first is the cleanest and the rarest. The second is the norm. The third is the one that catches people: it reads like “5%”, but it is 5% twice.

Why “5% + 5%” exists

The two lines usually map to two different labels: one a service charge, one an administration or handling fee. The amount is the same; the bill just shows it twice.

You do not need to argue about it. Ask one question before you commit: “What is the total at the end?” With that answered, two lines or three makes no difference — you are buying a number, not a label.

Three questions that stop the bill moving

  1. “Does this price include the service charge?” — separates “included” from “added”.
  2. “How long is an extension hour — 60 minutes or 45?” — same words, 15 minutes apart.
  3. “Is there a minimum spend or a charge for a named therapist?” — usually extra, so ask first.

Cheaper entry does not mean a cheaper night

Venue A enters at 1,199 with +10%. Venue B at 1,299 with the charge included. Both at the same 2,000 tier:

  • A: 2,000 × 1.1 = 2,200
  • B: 2,000

The one that looks 100 more expensive is 200 cheaper. That is why every venue page here states the service charge rather than only the entry price.

One line to remember: find the “service charge” line first. If there is not one, ask. Everything we quote is the total with it already in.
